Dining room makeover update...

The electrician came yesterday to hang my £4 car boot sale light with my £4 chazzed ceiling rose and I'm so thrilled. I keep gazing at it and getting told off for leaving the lights on. I need to caulk around the edges and paint the ceiling rose before the big reveal. But the rose and the light were made for each other. Don't you love it when two second hand things look great together?

Anyway, I'm also not showing you because I'm working on this;

It's very big! I've finished the bottom part with a new technique and I'm working on the top. For some reason I decided not to use home made chalk paint so I'm scrubbing EVERY INCH with fine wire wool and white spirit to remove the waxed finish. It's actually quite satisfying if you don't mind the smell.

But while I work on this, the room is filled with piles of crap that normally sit inside.
I'm toying with the idea of taking out the glass and adding chicken wire instead. The only thing is, the displayed things will get dusty. I don't like cleaning.

What do you think about chicken wire? Yay or nay?

  1. Glass! Chicken wire does look lovely but I do think the practicalities will win out in the end PLUS you won't be able to see your lovely collection of thingummyjigs so well PLUS imagine if you had to dust the wire PLUS it might look a bit dated soon. Or you could use chicken wire. Hope that helps ;) Jane x

  2. Nay nay nay to the chicken wire, too much like hard work! Can't wait for the big reveal! Reading about your projects keeps me on track with mine ( well gives me a kick up the bum when I've slacked off!!) Juries still out on chalk paint, I think it must be my technique :{

    1. It's not the easiest thing to use. I much prefer emulsion. You're not the only one who doesn't get on with it. x

  3. On a purely practical note keep the glass, but chicken wire does look lovely especially when sprayed an off white...that's not helpful. whoops!

    Keep the glass if you don't like cleaning x

    Cant wait to see the big reveal.

    1. I think what I may do is paint the top and then decide. At the moment it's looking very antiquey so I think the chicken wire would look good. If I absolutely lurve it then I might go with that.
      Could always write all over the glass though eh?

    2. ooh! Faux chicken wire on the glass! I did trompe l'oeil chicken wire on the bunny rabbit hutch toy box on the custom painting page...

  4. I see you have come up with your own solution, Emma Kate! So faux painted chicken wire on the existing glass it is! Best of all possible worlds!
    Looking forward to all the big reveals to come. Oh you do work hard at this house malarkey. You don't fancy coming to titivate mine, do you? xxxxx

  5. I'd probably keep the glass just because it's there already but I do like chicken wire too. We have an armoire which has chicken wire on the doors and it looks lovely methinks. Dusting? I wouldn't bother...!

  6. Put the chicken wire inside the glass? Saves time on painting faux chicken wire! And it wouldn't get dusty inside the glass... Hmm, not totally sure, but thought I'd at least chuck out the idea!

    1. It's a good idea, I'll have to see how it looks when I put it all back together. Thanks Maggie!

  7. you can buy glass with chicken wire inside it. Frosted used to be very commonplace but I think there is clear nowadays.

    I'd leave the glass myself. Chicken wire looks kind of like net curtains to me and a bit frilly even though it's the opposite. Dust is evil and on my once a year dusting I remind myself that it is but beggar's velvet!

  9. I say do it, leave the glass in and of you're not happy try the chicken wire. If I did it, it would look horrific, if you do it, it'll look brill!!

  10. I mentioned chicken wire when we were tarting up that bathroom cupboard last week (we've a bit in the shed leftover from making Jacob's new pen) but Jon accused me of going all Kirsty Alsopp which is akin to a swearword in our house.
    Can't wait to see the completed thing. x

    1. Oh dear! But how would he know that a bit of chicken wire might be right up Kirsties street? I reckon he's secretly a big fan and never misses a show. xxx
