Making decisions...

Here's the thing...
The stairs, lovely as they are, need something.

There's also a plain empty wall in my bedroom...

I have some ideas but I don't know what to do where. Perhaps you can help me out?

Idea 1. I'd like to create a gallery wall as I have a lovely collection of paintings that have lived in the loft for the past four and a half years. (All from charity shops/boot sales etc)

Husband HATES these religious ones. He says if I use them I will remind him of his mother. If he was cleverer he could win all arguments with this statement.

Idea 2. I have been collecting rolls of vintage wallpaper and I'd like to create a patchwork wallpaper wall. (I'm also concerned about this: some are wild and funky, some are pale and pretty. Can I use them altogether d'you think? Or do I have to spend another 5 years collecting and do either a 'pretty vintage' wall OR a 'funky vintage' wall?)

But the biggest decision I have to make is what goes where. I'm leaning towards wallpaper in the bedroom and pictures on the back wall of the stairs.

The bedroom has a neutral colour scheme so that would work. Would it be insane to have pictures ON TOP of a patchwork wallpaper wall? Too frantic? I don't want to give myself a migraine.

Because I also have this huge original 1963 film poster (family heirloom as my grandmother wrote the film) that needs re homing and I'm running out of walls. This could go on the back wall of the stairs? I'm also thinking of 'adding' to the painted stairs and the more neutral that wall is, the better it will look...

I'm getting nowhere fast. Your input would be very much appreciated. Who else can I ask? Certainly not the husband! My dad? I think not. C'mon ladies! You vintage loving, sheet collecting, chazzing, creative and clever ladies 'get this' more than anyone else in my life.

  1. I've run out of walls - am about to start on over the doors ...

my 10 cents - the film poster on the stairs half landing- big needs some distance to look good. And I think the motion/running in the poster goes well with stairs where one is seldom stationary. The cute pics in the bedroom. Use the religious frames to frame some wallpaper.

I need advice - I've lost a tin of varnish. spent 2 hours ransacking the house - cannot be found. Hubs denies everything. 10 mile round trip and £2.50 to park to buy another one or forget it and do something else?? Like read blogs ...

    1. Haha! Definately something else! The weather is meant to be pants today. You need to stay home and read blogs!
Framed wallpaper! Now there's an idea! x

  2. 1) perhaps you could put wallpaper on block canvases, same size or different - another take on patchwork.

    2) I would put floral pictures together and perhaps add some more - maybe floral wallpaper in frames grey or white.

    1. Thank you, the block canvas idea is cool. I think you're right, I do need more flower pictures...

  3. I love the film poster and the special meaning it has. I'm a lover of hanging the whole lot up en masse, religious stuff and all.
I love the idea of a patchworked wallpaper canvas. xxx

  4. I think the religious stuff is pretty much banned, which is a great shame. xxx

  5. Have you thought about framing the wallpaper and making a mish-mash patchwork of frames? The buffer between pieces of wallpaper might mean you can chuck all the different styles alongside each other better...?

Can't wait to see what you plump for...

  6. I wish I could offer some advice but I'm afraid if I was trying to decide I'd be debating the options for quite a while before even coming close to a decision. You have lots of lovely items though and I can't wait to see how you decide to use them. X

    1. That's my problem, I spend so much time thinking it through as I don't want to stuff it up, and then I can't start anyting. Don't hold your breath! ;) x

  7. I've seen a room before with strips of lots of different wallpapers next to each other (in Mollie Makes) or you could do blocks like this - http://pinterest.com/pin/304415256032054620/

I'm definitely voting for wallpaper in bedroom and gallery wall up the stairs. I've been working on our gallery wall for ages; I think it makes stairs much more interesting, and I'm less likely to get bored of the pictures as I only catch brief glimpses of each one as I'm flitting past on my way to the bathroom. xxx

  8. I'd love to see your gallery wall! I do like the idea of the stripes too and I've seen that done. Also you don't need so many wallpapers for that look! It's easier to make them coordinate with each other! xxx

  9. How about your vintage wallpaper on the front of each stair, I've seen it before and looks lovely. Would suit your staircase beautifully I think. Look forward to seeing where you hang your amazing collection.

    1. I absolutely love that look too! But worry about it getting scuffed and torn...!(I'm VERY clumsy!) I guess you'd varnish it to try and strengthen it? Oh, now you've got me thinking!

  10. Sadly, I have no advice to offer but I still have things to say :). That post is great. Your grandmother wrote that? I had to giggle at the description, she loved the whole student body and they sure loved hers...how funny. I am also envious of your vintage wallpaper collection. I am sure whatever you do, it will be lovely!

    1. I'm glad you like the poster! She actually wrote the book that was made into the film and my dad went to the film premiere at Leicester Square. It's pretty cool! Tamahine was raised on a desert island until her dad died and she had to live with her Uncle who was the headmaster of a boys boarding school! Mayhem followed!

  11. Great poster, especially with the history attached to it! I think it would look fab on the wall going up the stairs? Do you ever venture onto Pinterest? Yesterday I saw a wallpaper montage (well it says it was done with decals but looks like paper) which I pinned to one of my boards here, it is in greys and yellows http://pinterest.com/antoniacl/wallpaper-and-paint-effects/ There will be loads more inspiration on Pinterest, but beware as it sucks you in!

    1. Yes I am on pinterest. You can easily lose a few hours on there! I like one that is rolls of vintage wallpaper standing in a crate. Good for the undecided!

    2. Ha ha, that one would be a good one for me - I can never make up my mind.

I saw another montage today with vintage paper, I'll see if I can find it.

  12. Oh goodness, don't be asking for me for advice about stylish interiors, Emma Kate, that's definitely NOT my area of expertise... But it IS yours, and I think you will make a good choice, whatever you do. I Love the film poster, make sure that one has pride of place, isn't it fabulous? And I also like lots of pics grouped together, but as to whether that should be on the stairs or the bedroom... I don't know. The wallpaper on the stair fronts would look great too, ask Vix how she strengthened hers to prevent it getting scuffed, though I am guessing you don't want to distract from the beauty of the whiteness, after all your hard work doing them! xxxxx

    1. Well, I am planning on altering the stairs but in a different way. You're right, I don't think I could handle quite so much colour on my stairs.
Just bought another rose painting off ebay. Oops.

  13. I like the idea of a flower painting wall, I've got a small collection on my bedroom wall and always look out for them at boot sales-it's nice admiring them while you're sitting in bed reading or watching tv and wouldn't be too hard on your eyes! I love patchwork walls and I guess if there was one on the staircase wall it wouldn't be in your face the whole time. Definitely mix and match the wallpapers IMO. Oh and I like religious figures too as long as you don't overdo it-I've got a couple of small figurines which are randomly displayed with other favourite things such as vintage rulers, old world globe and old books stacked-love that look!

    1. Thanks Gill! I also have some religious statues which I love, but I know what you mean about them. There's a fine line between looking eclectic and looking like a religious nut job. x

  14. Hi
I like the idea of wallpaper on the stairs too!
If you have a look at Sarah Moore Vintage, she does that and it looks lovely.
