Secret vintage wallpaper...

I finished the chest of drawers late last night. I hate it. I have to do it again today. It's slightly depressing. As if it weren't bad enough, having to have ALL of ones summer clothing out alongside the winter clothing because it's so cold, I have nowhere to put ANYTHING! There are piles all over the upstairs and my husband and daughter are getting fed up with me.

I'm getting fed up with me too.

So, on a different subject, I bought an old picture frame from a charity shop. I thought it would be nice if my six year old painted me a picture for my future gallery wall. The frame I found was a few quid from Oxfam. It's been painted in the past and that's fine. The glass has little air bubbles in it so it's very old.

On the back someone had stuck some old wallpaper. I guess to keep thunder bugs out. That excited me!  So I took it home and carefully steamed it off, ignoring my husband saying, ''What are you DOING? It's RUBBISH! Who would want that?''

Here's where it got exciting. Under that wallpaper was another wallpaper.

And underneath that, was another wallpaper...

And under that wallpaper was another one. Probably the nicest one of all but sadly, very brittle and hard to get a big piece.

It felt a bit like pass the parcel. I like to think of someone changing their picture every now and then and re-wallpapering the back every time with leftovers of whatever was in fashion at the time. Make do and mend, indeed!

The two largest pieces are being saved for the wallpaper wall.

Right! Enough fannying around. There's work to be done...

  3. Good grief - I was wondering how many more you were going to find! I'd love to know what pictures have gone alongside each piece. How frustrating about your drawers (although I bet they look beautiful anyway) x Jane

I love the many layers of wallpaper you've revealed- how exciting it must have been to peel back the years!!

  5. Brilliant! I have memories of living in an old terraced house when I was younger and my mum and dad peeling layer after layer of old wallpaper off every wall in the house before they could decorate.

    1. I found some really pretty stuff in my last house and some sixties childrens wallpaper here but just tiny fragments when we changed the windows. It's like finding treasure!

  6. It reminds me of the days when newspapers were put down on floors before lino or carpets and the excitement of finding them years and years later. Sorry you're not happy with the chest, good luck with the re-do. I think knowing that sometimes something doesn't work out is inspirational for someone like me who is afraid to try just in case I don't like it. I have a few projects of my own, all very small, but I have been delaying them because I think what if I mess up...xxx

  7. I can spend YEARS deciding how to go about things because I don't want to stuff it up. Funny thing is, if you do stuff it up you can fix it. Okay, it's taken me a whole day but I'm happy with it now. And things evolve. Sometimes the colour in your head looks terrible because it doesn't work in the room. This was my problem with the chest of drawers. Have a go with the small projects. You'll learn so much by just doing it! xxx
P.S. Finding property pages under carpet is the best! Seeing that a few thousand pounds could buy a house!

  8. Ha! This reminds me of the story in the news this week of the chap who had found a comic in the walls of his house that's worth more than the entire building!! You keep digging and hunting and peeling my dear!!
